THE NETWORK

IoT Sweden is the first IoT-operator in Sweden that together with Sigfox, the world`s leading provider of Low Power Wide Area Network, is building a network for IoT that will have 45% population coverage under 2017.

We will continue to expand our network during 2018 to cover the whole of Sweden.

CHEAP, RELIABLE & SECURE

Existing network solutions were not built for low throughput M2M (Machine-to-Machine) and IoT (Internet of Things) applications. Many companies currently deploying connected objects are struggling with the major drawbacks of traditional network solutions: steep pricing, the high-energy consumption, the complexity of deployment, and maintenance.

The network that IoT Sweden is building in collaboration with Sigfox is utilizing LPWAN technology, aimed exclusively towards IoT with low bandwidth and very low power consumption, therefore very low costs. It also has a robust built-in security with high capacity.

SECURITY OF THE SIGFOX NETWORK

Firstly, security comes with each device. Security is also supported by radio technology. The communication between the base stations and the Sigfox Cloud, as well as the Sigfox cloud itself, are secure, robust, trusted, and scalable. At the chain end, IT platforms of customers are connected to the Sigfox Cloud using HTTPS encrypted interfaces.

Why SIGFOX?

Simply because they are long range (an object could be 20km away), they require low power to connect (objects can last 10 years on very small batteries), and the cost of connection is very low (as low as SEK 14,28/year/device). However, they are limited in terms of the size of messages you can send.

Clearly, they are not made for sending audio & video files. With such networks, you can start wireless connecting any kind of sensors directly to the cloud. Sensors such as temperature, humidity, battery status, GPS location, …Etc. In addition to these sensors, you can also start having objects communicating together on pre-programmed scenarios.

For example: If your water meter was connected and the sensor was detecting a leak. Instead of just sending you an alert message, it could decide to act on another type of sensor (actuator) to cut a specific water access point before it was too late. It could also directly contact the water company to fix the problem.

These kinds of solutions or scenarios are opening a new world of automatization that was never possible before because it was too costly & required too much energy.

DOWNLINK CONNECTIVITY

The downlink process of Sigfox brings additional security robustness. When objects have their “ears” closed they can’t listen to anything that might be sent by a hacker. The objects choose when to communicate and at which frequency. This is protecting them from a hacker sending them a misplaced and unattended command.
